I was wholly transfixed by the image: the Material Girl, splayed out across satiny sheets, head cocked, eyebrow arched, wearing a corseted tulle wedding dress, lace gloves, stacks of bracelets, and that “Boy Toy” belt. I kicked off my preteen years in suburban Massachusetts with an affection for Casey Kasem pop and its attendant Lycra-laced minis and overdyed denim, all sprung from mall stalwarts Contempo Casuals and Units.
